Hockey: Ntumba Reflects On Previous Season, Sets New Targets
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Weatherhead Hockey Club midfielder Timothy Ntumba was a pivotal man for his side during the previous season that saw his team finish as runners up in the men’s league.

In the 2019 season, Wananchi snatched the men’s title at Weatherhead’s grasp during the season’s finale with proceedings having gone to the wire (60 points each before the finale).

Ntumba, 23 featured on the score sheet as his side lost 3-4  to Wananchi but was also sent off alongside his teammate Brian Okodi following a melee that ensued between Weatherhead and Wananchi bodies during the last chapters of the well-attended game.

Albeit a false ending to the season, Ntumba has heaped praise on the league’s competitiveness with the previous season serving as a testimony though he claims that his side was cheated.

“Last year’s League was very competitive,” Ntumba admitted but added that; “for me I think the league was in the hands of my mighty club Weatherhead only that there was a match fixing incident at the end of the league. I got sent off in two of the last games including against Wananchi and the red cards were not fair at all.”

After getting matching orders twice in the last games, Ntumba somehow feels that he personally let his side down but now seeks to make amends once the new season kicks off early next year. This year’s league was cancelled due to COVID-19.

“Among others, my targets next year are: winning the league and also winning the USPA (Uganda Sports Press Association) Hockey player of the year award,” Ntumba, a former defender said adding that he is expecting umpires to do better in the new season.

Wananchi was the only men’s side to collect maximum points from Weatherhead last season but Ntumba believes that their perennial rivals can be tamed next season.

Wananchi teams are title holders in both the men’s and women’s leagues after retaining the championships last time out.
