After a two-year hiatus caused by Covid-19 disruptions and the like, the annual Kabaka’s Coronation Golf Tournament is back and this year’s edition will be played on Saturday, 23rd July at Uganda Golf Club’s par-72 course in Kitante, Kampala.
The event is organized by Buganda Golfers Association as part of the celebrations to mark Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s 29th coronation festivities. The coronation event is celebrated on 31st July every year.
According to organizers, up to 200 amateur golfers are expected to grace the event, whose main objective is to help fight against HIV/AIDs but majorly focusing on the girl child.
Buganda Kingdom Parliament (Lukiiko) speaker Owek. Patrick Luwagga Mugumbule is the chairperson of the Kabaka Coronation festival. He anticipates a very successful golf event which is one of the activities to mark the festivities.
“The Kabaka Coronation Golf Anniversary Tournament is part of the activities to celebrate the coronation of the Kabaka. The preparations are progressing smoothly. Along the theme of fighting the HIV/AIDS scourge, the tournament will aim to raise funds towards this noble cause especially helping with the islanders,” Owek. Luwagga said during the tournament launch on Tuesday at the Uganda Golf Club terrace.
Uganda Golf Club captain Emmanuel Wamala and Buganda Golfers Association captain Samuel Mubiru Lugonvu also graced the tournament launch and both are positive ahead of tee-off.
“We are more than ready to host the Kabaka Coronation Golf tournament this Saturday. The course has been well prepared, the golfers are keen to take part. We expect a full field of about 180 to 200 golfers to play. We shall use the stableford full handicap format,” Wamala said.
Mubiru noted that the event is one of the activities that they have alongside the Kabaka Birthday golf tournament and Inter-regions tournament to mark the coronation.
“We expect a very good event. Buganda Kingdom is fully supportive of this event. The best teams on the day and individual players will take home trophies and other goodies,” Mubiru added.
He also said that the event has secured partners/sponsors including; Airtel, Nissan Motors, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Case Clinic, DHL, Housing Finance Bank, Jesa, Ultra Limited and others.
On Saturday, high ranking officials from Buganda Kingdom will tee-off in the morning and as well grace the 19th hole experience later in the evening.
The tournament will mark its fifth staging this weekend with the inaugural edition having been held in 2016. 2020 and 2021 were not held due to Covid-19 disruptions.
