MLS side, New York Red Bulls have announced the promotion of Ibrahim Sekagya to a full-time First Team Assistant Coach, marking a significant step in the Ugandan’s coaching journey within the organization.
The announcement comes just moments after the departure of Assistant Coach Vedad Ibišević, who leaves the club after a one-and-a-half-year stint with the first team.
“We are pleased to add Ibra [Sekagya] to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Jochen Schneider, Head of Sport at the New York Red Bulls. “He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and has led the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity, and we are grateful to have him as a part of this organization.”
Sekagya, who has served as Head Coach of New York Red Bulls II since February 2023, will officially begin his new role immediately. His final game in charge of NYRB II will be on Saturday, June 15, against Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park. A replacement for the NYRB II head coach position will be announced in due course.
During his tenure as NYRB II Head Coach, Sekagya guided the team to a 14-8-6 record and a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference in 2023, culminating in a run to the conference semifinals. This season, his side has surged to their best start in club history, going 8-2-2 in their first 12 matches and leading the league with 27 goals scored.
Sekagya has also played a key role in player development, mentoring talents such as Omar Valencia, who currently leads the Red Bulls First Team in assists, and Mohammed Sofo, who has notched seven goals in all competitions this season.
A former center-back, Sekagya is no stranger to the Red Bulls family. He played for the New York Red Bulls from 2013 to 2014, making 41 appearances and helping the club to its 2013 Supporters’ Shield triumph. He also enjoyed a successful stint with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he featured in 225 matches from 2007 to 2013.
