Inclusive golf, mental wellness, and sustainability: Afriyea Golf Academy’s holiday mission
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

As this year’s second academic term draws closer, Afriyea Golf Academy is gearing up for an exciting holiday program aimed at fostering access to golf for junior players and raising awareness about mental health.

The program will take place at the historic Toro Club in Fort Portal, beginning on Monday, August 18, 2024.

The Afriyea Golf Academy has always been at the forefront of promoting golf as an inclusive and accessible sport for children across Uganda. This holiday program is part of the academy’s broader mission to not only develop the next generation of golfers but also to emphasize the importance of mental well-being among young athletes.

The academy recognizes that the holiday season is an opportune time for children to engage in activities that nurture their physical and mental health. By focusing on golf, the academy aims to provide a structured environment where junior golfers can develop their skills, stay active, and build resilience—key components of mental health.

The program will feature a range of activities tailored to different skill levels, ensuring that all participants, from beginners to more experienced golfers, have the opportunity to learn and grow. The academy’s coaches like Happy Robert and Lillian Koowe among other who are on their six month High Performance Training (HPT) conducted by the Golf Foundation and supported by the Uganda Golf union and the R&A –
will be on hand to provide instruction, while also incorporating lessons on the mental aspects of the game, such as focus, patience, and handling pressure—skills that are valuable both on and off the golf course.

In addition to the physical and technical aspects of the sport, the holiday program will include sessions dedicated to mental health awareness. These sessions will cover topics such as managing stress, maintaining a positive mindset, and the importance of a balanced lifestyle. By integrating mental health education into the program, the Afriyea Golf Academy hopes to equip young golfers with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of life, both in sports and beyond.

The decision to hold this program at the Toro Club is significant. The club, located in of Fort Portal, is not only a hub for golf in the region but also provides a serene environment conducive to relaxation and mental rejuvenation.

Isaiah Mwesige, the Founder of the Afriyea Golf Academy, emphasized the importance of this holiday program: “Golf is more than just a sport; it’s a way to teach life skills and foster well-being. Through this holiday program, we aim to make golf accessible to more children while also addressing the critical issue of mental health and not forgetting teaching kids about life Skills and environmental sustainability. We want our young golfers to thrive both on the course and in their everyday lives.”
