The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled for 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.
The decision comes after CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts, some of whom have been stationed in the three host nations, recommended additional time to ensure all infrastructure and facilities meet the requisite standards for hosting a successful tournament.
Significant progress has been reported in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure. However, CAF has emphasized the need for further work to achieve the necessary quality levels for a world-class event.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his gratitude to Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for their commitment to the project. “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of football infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that the facilities will meet CAF’s standards by August 2025,” he said.
Despite the postponement, CAF has confirmed that the tournament’s draw will proceed as scheduled on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM Nairobi time in Nairobi, Kenya. The exact dates for the rescheduled tournament in August 2025 will be announced later.
