A late goal from Manchester United winger Amad Diallo earned Ivory Coast a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, handing the African side their first World Cup win in 12 years.
In an entertaining contest played in Philadelphia, Ecuador dominated large stretches of the match and created the better opportunities, but their inability to convert chances proved costly as Ivory Coast snatched all three points in the closing moments.
The South Americans came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half. Enner Valencia squandered an early opportunity after a defensive slip by Emmanuel Agbadou gifted him space inside the penalty area. John Yeboah then rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort from the edge of the box before Alan Minda also struck the woodwork following a clever through ball from Pedro Vite.
Ivory Coast, however, remained a threat on the counterattack, largely through the lively Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old winger consistently troubled Ecuador’s defence down the right flank, though his teammates were unable to capitalize on several promising situations before halftime.
Ecuador continued to press after the break, with Valencia striking the outside of the post following a neat exchange with Gonzalo Plata. Yet as the second half progressed, Ivory Coast grew into the game and began creating the more dangerous chances.
Diomande remained at the heart of their attacking play, twice breaking into the penalty area only to fire over the bar. He also played a key role in one of Ivory Coast’s best opportunities when his cross was turned onto the crossbar by Elye Wahi.
At the other end, Plata tested goalkeeper Yahia Fofana with a long-range effort, while Joel Ordóñez headed narrowly over from a set piece. But with the match seemingly destined for a draw, Ivory Coast found the decisive breakthrough.
In the 90th minute, Wilfried Singo surged forward and delivered a dangerous cross into the area. The ball eventually fell to substitute Amad, who kept his composure and guided a low finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, sparking celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters.
The victory gives coach Emerse Fae’s side a crucial start to their World Cup campaign and rewards a resilient performance in which they withstood sustained Ecuadorian pressure before delivering the decisive blow. For Ecuador, the defeat will be a frustrating one after hitting the woodwork three times and failing to make their dominance count.
