A1 Challenge on Wednesday broke JKL Lady Dolphins’ unbeaten run in this season National women basketball league. The defending champions painfully lost by a point after 49-48 final score in an epic tie at the YMCA court, Wandegeya.
JKL Dolphins had gone 13 games unbeaten before the Wednesday loss that came with frenzy celebrations from the A1 Challenge players and fans on the opposite end.
With the game tied 48-48, A1’s Elizabeth Akol made one of the two free throws to give her side a 49-48 lead with about 30 seconds to the end of the game.
JKL’s Rita Imanishimwe was denied at the other end when her two point shot was blocked by Charline Ursula before A1 shared the ball as the clock expired.
JKL officials led by technical director Fredericks Owora raised different complaints over officiating but could change nothing. A1 trailed 20-29 by half time, but Hamza Nyambogo’s charges bounced back strongly to win the third quarter 17-10 of the low scoring game that exchanged leads.
A1 shot just 18 of 72 from the field and were out rebounded 60-69. JKL made 21 turnovers and had their bench produce just five points.
Ruth Atuheire scored a game high 20 points and picked 13 rebounds. Agnettah Kambua and Georgia Adhiambo made seven points each. Susan Amito and Charline Ursula contributed 10 rebounds each.
Elizabeth Akol weighed in with six assists. Jamila Nansikombi (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Hope Akello (10 points, 22 rebounds) could not enough to save JKL that had won the first round fixture 70- 42 in April at the same venue.
City Oilers fire past Our Saviour
Meanwhile, six-time straight champions City Oilers walloped Our Saviour 110-53 in a one sided affair that concluded the Wednesday action.
Without Head Coach Mandy Juruni who is in the United States, Andrew Tendo was assisted by Stephen Omony as the men defending Champions recorded deserved win.
Oilers opened a 20-point lead in the opening quarter on their way to sealing 8th straight victory of the season.
Jonathan Egau scored 17 points, his season high so far after missing much of the action due to injury.
He added 9 rebounds. Landry Ndikumana and Abel Omomgin had 15 and 14 points each. Jimmy Enabu (13), Francis Chisioke (13), Ivan Muhwezi (11) and James Okello (11) all reached double figures. Maker Mayen scored 17 points while Elton Donald added 11 for Our Saviour who still wait for their first win of the season.
