After two days of intense competition in the ladies event of the 2023 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship (Uganda Ladies Open), scratch golfer Peace Kabasweka is still in the lead going into the final round on Saturday.
Kabasweka, who is in pursuit for a maiden Uganda Open title started off strong on the first day of the tournament (Thursday) and has managed to maintain her lead despite some tough competition from other golfers at the Uganda Golf Club’s par 72 course in Kitante, Kampala. She had 4 under par 68 on day one and 3 over par 75 on day two, posting a total of 1 under par 143 heading into the final round.
Kabasweka who’s playing on home course now has a four-stroke lead and could get off the mark in the Uganda Open if she holds onto her lead one last time. Tanzanian Madina Iddy Hussein, handicap 1.5 is still second but now with 3 over par 147, a one stroke improvement from day one in regard to her pursuit for the top spot.
Unlike in the opening day where she had a bogey-free round, Kabasweka dropped four shots on Friday. She had bogeys at the par 3 hole 4, par 4 hole 12, par 4 hole 15 and par 4 hole 16. However she capped the front nine with a birdie at the par 3 hole 9. In the other holes she had pars.
Six Ugandans, three Kenyans and one Tanzanian, are in the top 10 of the leaderboard.
Title holder, Martha Babirye has made her way to the top 10 ahead of the final round but she won’t be in the pressure group as she is currently seventh with 10 over par 154, 11 shots behind the leader.
The final round of the ladies event promises to be an exciting one, with fans and players alike eagerly anticipating the outcome. But for now, all eyes are on Kabasweka, the lady golfer who has managed to hold onto her lead after two rounds.
