The first-ever Kakira Rugby 7s Tournament concluded over the weekend, with a day of exciting rugby action that marked a new chapter for the sport in Eastern Uganda.

Held in Kakira, the event attracted eight men’s and four ladies’ teams from the region, drawing large crowds and showcasing the increasing popularity of rugby in a town traditionally known for its love of football.

The tournament featured fast-paced and competitive matches, with teams displaying high levels of skill and sportsmanship.

Spectators turned out in large numbers, creating a vibrant and electric atmosphere that highlighted the growing community support for rugby in the area.

The presence of Kakira Town Council Mayor, Mr. Sunday Kabule, added to the event’s significance, as he presented the awards to the top-performing teams and expressed his pride in the region’s expanding rugby culture.

Local sponsors played a key role in ensuring the success of the tournament. Newman’s Food sponsored the awards, while Jibu Water Jinja provided hydration for players and officials throughout the day. African Scorpions, in collaboration with Kakira Rugby Club, donated rugby balls to the participating teams and helped support youth rugby development programs in the region.

Atibu Saidi, Director of Rugby for Kakira Rugby Football Club, thanked the community, sponsors, and the Eastern Uganda Rugby Union for their contributions to the tournament’s success. “The overwhelming support we’ve received has shown the potential for rugby to grow in Kakira. This event has been a tremendous success, and we’re excited for the future of the sport in our region,” he said.

With the success of the Kakira Rugby 7s Tournament, rugby is firmly establishing itself in Kakira, and the organizers are hopeful that this is just the beginning of a new era for the sport in the region.
