Kenya began their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaign on a high note, registering a hard-fought 1-0 victory over two-time winners DR Congo in the opening Group B match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Austin Odhiambo scored the game’s only goal on the stroke of half-time, dancing past a defender before firing home a clinical finish that sent the sold-out crowd into a frenzy.
Kenya dominated large stretches of the first half, showing attacking intent and controlling possession. The breakthrough came just before the break, but the Harambee Stars had earlier survived a scare when Aboud Omar’s goal was ruled out by VAR.
Head coach Benni McCarthy opted for a 4-2-2 setup that provided attacking width and balance in midfield. Despite several chances, DR Congo’s goalkeeper Brudel Efonge made crucial saves to keep his side in the contest.
In the second half, DR Congo pushed forward in search of an equalizer, with Ibrahim Maboto Mubalu causing problems down the left flank. However, Kenya’s defense held firm, backed by a disciplined midfield and composed backline.
McCarthy later rang in tactical substitutions, bringing on Marvin Nabwire for Manzur Suleiman, while fresh legs in Austin Odongo, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Bonface Muchiri bolstered Kenya’s attack.
The full-time whistle sparked celebrations across Kasarani, with President William Ruto in attendance to witness the national team’s impressive display.
“I’m proud of my team — very brave and tactical, especially considering it’s the first time many of them are playing on such a big stage,” McCarthy said post-match.
DR Congo head coach Otis N’goma admitted his side struggled with the hosts’ physical presence. “It was difficult playing against a team that is very athletic. We will work on improving for the next matches,” he noted.
The victory puts Kenya top of Group B ahead of the day’s second match between Morocco and Angola.
