Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom recently celebrated its 29th Coronation Anniversary in an inspiring and unique way, with King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV championing grassroots golf development. The occasion was marked by the launch of the inaugural Tooro Kingdom Inter-Clans Juniors Golf Championship, held at Toro Golf Club, Fort Portal.
The event, organized by the AFRIYEA Golf Academy in partnership with Tooro Kingdom, saw 13 clans competing in the finals. Children aged 4-18 represented their clans, showcasing their budding talent in what promises to be a transformative moment for the kingdom’s youth and sports development.
This year, King Oyo’s decision to celebrate the occasion on the golf course highlights his vision for using sports, particularly golf, to foster social transformation across Uganda and beyond.
Launch of the Tooro Kingdom Inter-Clans Juniors Golf Championship
The championship, an innovative initiative aimed at promoting cultural unity through sports, gathered children from various clans, allowing them to develop their skills while honoring their heritage. AFRIYEA Golf Academy, based at Toro Golf Club, has been instrumental in training these young players, emphasizing both technical abilities and life values like discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for nature.
A Moment of Unity: Guests and Dignitaries
High-profile guests in attendance included Hon. Alex Ruhunda, Member of Parliament for Fort Portal Central Division, and Mzee Basaliza, Uganda’s oldest golfer. Prominent figures like Joan Else Kantu, Tooro Kingdom’s Minister of Tourism, and Fredrick Nyakabwa, Former Minister of Information, were also present.
The event was sponsored by MTN Uganda, Plascon, Talent Africa, and others who share a common goal of promoting youth development through sports.
Golf as a Catalyst for Transformation
Hon. Alex Ruhunda reiterated the importance of sports in driving tourism and development in Tooro Kingdom: “We are committed to making Fort Portal and Tooro Kingdom hubs of sports, aligned with the incredible work done by AFRIYEA Golf Academy. These young golfers will become great ambassadors of Tooro as we grow our tourism sector.”
Isaiah Mwesige, Founder and CEO of AFRIYEA Golf Academy, echoed this vision, emphasizing the role of golf in socio-economic transformation. “This competition is an opportunity to create inclusive access to golf, helping the youth embrace their culture and discover potential careers in the sport,” Mwesige said.
Fred Kirungi, Chairman of Tooro Golf Club, also praised King Oyo’s commitment, extending an invitation for the King to join the club.

Joan Else Kantu highlighted the potential of golf and tourism in Tooro Kingdom: “Golf is a tool that brings communities together, and we aim to build on this relationship to boost the kingdom’s visibility and opportunities for underprivileged communities.”
With its scenic landscape and rich cultural heritage, Tooro Kingdom has the potential to attract international tourists, making it a unique destination for both sport and culture.

In a symbolic gesture, King Oyo himself played on the course, teeing off at the 10th hole and delivering a display of precision putting. His participation sent a clear message of leadership and dedication to inspiring others through action.
