Kampala Old Boys (KOBs) Rugby Football Club on Friday relaunched the Kitaka 10s as they continue to celebrate sixty years of existence. The launch happened at Legends Rugby Club where the tournament will be played on 30th September and 1st October.

Kitaka 10s will mark a continuation of the club’s diamond jubilee celebrations and it will be the only activity to directly involve other rugby clubs. Kobs already held a medical camp in July and other charity events. A dinner slated for November will cap the celebrations but before then, other charity events will be held notably the Naguru charity drive also slated for November.

The Kitaka 10s, a 10-aside international and invitational rugby tournament was started in 2006 and 2007 in memory of the KOBs RFC Patron and Chairman, Edward Kitaka. Over the years, the tournament morphed into Kitaka 7s which was held as the last circuit of the Uganda Rugby Union 7s calendar.

This year the tournament will be graced by five rugby clubs from Kenya and 11 rugby clubs from Uganda that will compete for the prestigious main cup. Four ladies’ teams will play a round robin tournament of which the top two will qualify for the main cup final.

“We want to make the event very lucrative for people who will play in it and that means we are looking out for partners that will make that possible. We are looking for beer and soda partners and we hope that this will be a good festival,” noted Dr Tonny Livingstone Luggya, KOBs RFC Chairman.

Dr Luggya added that having teams from Kenya in the mix will provide fierce competition for the local sides. Participating teams will be announced this coming Thursday.

“These matches will provide an opportunity for players to showcase their skills and strengthen the bond of sportsmanship. They will also serve as a testament to the enduring spirit, growth and competitiveness of rugby in Uganda,” Dr Luggya said.

Luggya believes that diamond jubilee celebrations not only honor the club’s rich history but also provides the club an pportunity to give back to the community that has supported them over the years.

With the support of the various stakeholders, the club hopes to grow the tournament into the biggest social sport and lifestyle event in the region providing exceptional rugby experience as well as opportunities for sponsors to brand and reach a new market segment.
