The inaugural President’s Cup at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, Kigo is headed for an electrifying climax, with Meron Kyomugisha set to face Peace Kabasweka in a much-anticipated ladies’ final this Friday.
Kyomugisha dug deep to edge out Martha Babirye on the 18th green in a tightly contested semi-final, while Kabasweka cruised past Gloria Mbaguta with a dominant 8&7 victory. The latter’s commanding performance places her as the favorite going into the final, although Kyomugisha’s grit and fighting spirit make her a formidable challenger in the match play format.
“I feel like I will play better than I did against Babirye,” said Kyomugisha, acknowledging the tough task ahead against Kabasweka. “Given the profile of Kabasweka, I’ll have to bring my A-game.”
In the men’s category, fans are in for a treat as Joseph Cwinya-ai and Joseph Akena look set for a potential rematch of last year’s Uganda Open final. Cwinya-ai comfortably beat Ibra Bagalana in the quarters, while Akena ended the strong run of Shashank Gadre. Both are in top form, and their semi-final clash promises fireworks.
The other semi-final will see veteran golfer Andrew Ssekibejja take on Titus Okwong. Okwong, aware of the challenge ahead, said: “This is his course; he knows it very well. But I feel like I have been swinging well and I do fancy my chances, to be honest.”
Friday’s main draw will be supported by a subsidiary competition featuring top golf figures, including Uganda Golf Union trustee Amos Nzeyi, former UGU President Moses Matsiko, and NBS CEO Kin Kariisa.
On Saturday, the venue will also host the eagerly awaited Muema Challenge, bringing together golfers from Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.
