Lacrosse continues to grow in Uganda’s school sports scene, with a total of nine schools participating in the discipline at the ongoing Ball Games II Championship in Tororo.
The sport has drawn participation from five girls’ schools and four boys’ schools, highlighting increasing interest across genders.
Although lacrosse has been in Uganda for 15 years, its introduction to schools began much later. According to Lacrosse Uganda President Mbabazi Liberty, Nabisunsa Girls’ School was among the first to embrace the sport when approached for the initial rollout.
Other participating schools include Muzza High School, Empower International, Bombo Army Secondary School, Lowell Girls, and St. Peter’s College Tororo—showing a steady expansion of the sport’s reach.
“We are glad that lacrosse is part of the USSSA Ball Games for the third year in a row,” said Mbabazi. “We hope to get more schools on board.”
She also acknowledged the high cost of equipment as a barrier to entry, with a single lacrosse stick priced between UGX 400,000 and 500,000. “That’s why we, at Lacrosse Uganda, provide all the necessary equipment to schools—from sticks to chest guards and helmets—to ensure safety and accessibility.”
Looking ahead, lacrosse will feature as one of the demonstration sports at the upcoming FEASSA Games in Kakamega, Kenya, this August—another milestone in the sport’s journey in East Africa.
