Uganda Lady Cranes won all their fixtures in the opening matchday of the 2022 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s on Friday in Jammel, Tunisia.
Lady Cranes were the better side in pool B, beating Zambia and neighbors Kenya 15-05 and 10-07 respectively putting them in a good spot ahead of the final day of the two-day event.
In the opening match against Zambia, Peace Lekuru and Grace Auma (2) scored three of Uganda’s tries.
In a highly anticipated clash against Kenya, Lady Cranes were still the better side as tries by Yvonne Najjuma and Charlotte Mudoola ensured that the neighbors are silenced.
Lady Cranes 7s Coach Charles Onen expressed delight in the results but urges his side to focus on the final bend of proceedings.
“The excitement is on with the girls. They performed really well and it’s been a good fight. The girls are in good mood,” Onen said adding that the post group stage phase of the competition is very important.
Teams will be reseeded and Top 8 play quarters tomorrow. By press time, Uganda were ranked third on the table behind leaders South Africa and second placed Madagascar.
The tournament is a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games and the women’s 7s Rugby World Cup with the global showpiece set to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in September 2022 and the former set for July in Birmingham.
For the World Cup, South Africa already qualified (as hosts) but one additional African team will get a slot based on performance. Only one ticket is available for the Commonwealth Games.
Lady Cranes who finished fifth in the previous edition of the Africa women’s 7s held in Tunis in 2019 will seek to return to the World Cup since 2018 having made their debut in 2008.
