The Uganda Rugby Union today flagged off the Uganda national women’s rugby 15s team, Lady Cranes XVs, in a ceremony held at Cooper Chimney, Lugogo, as the team begins final preparations for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup (Performance Division) set to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 21 to 31 May 2026.
The send-off event was attended by officials from the Uganda Rugby leadership and representatives from the National Council of Sports (Uganda), underscoring institutional support for the team’s continental campaign. The Uganda Rugby Executive was represented by Prossey Pearce Nakakande, Phionah Karungi, and Peter Odong, while the National Council of Sports delegation included Chelangat Sarah and Joseph Oluga.
The Lady Cranes XVs will travel to Kenya on Thursday, 21 May 2026. Their opening fixture is scheduled against hosts Kenya on Saturday, 23 May 2026, with subsequent matches against South Africa and Madagascar in the Performance Division.
Team captain Angella Nanyonjo expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, highlighting a balanced team composition featuring both experienced players and emerging talent from the domestic league.
“The team is excited. We have a blend of young players who have performed well in the local league, and we can’t wait to play with them,” said Nanyonjo.
The Rugby Africa Women’s Cup forms part of the continent’s competitive pathway under the governance of Rugby Africa, with participating teams aiming to strengthen their rankings and development ahead of global competitions. The sport is also overseen internationally by World Rugby.
