As the final leg of the 2025 Pearl of Africa (POA) Golf Series approaches, all eyes turn to Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club. Set to be played in July on the par-71 course nestled in the heart of Mehta’s sugar plantations, the event marks a defining moment for both the series and Uganda’s golfing calendar.
Though the POA Series only launched this year, it has already made a lasting impression. The first two legs at Uganda Golf Club (UGC) and Entebbe were hailed as major successes. At UGC, amateur John Musiimenta and professional Marvin Kibirige emerged victorious, while in Entebbe, 50-year-old Michael Tumusiime proved that age is just a number by clinching the amateur title. The professional title went to local favourite Herman ‘Deco’ Mutebi, whose win delighted the home crowd.
Organisers are optimistic that the final leg at Lugazi Hills will draw even more interest and produce captivating rounds as the series concludes.
The POA event also comes at a strategic time. Lugazi Hills will host the prestigious Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open in August and September for the first time in the tournament’s history. Both amateur and professional golfers are expected to use the POA Series finale as a crucial warm-up and a chance to familiarise themselves with a course that demands peak fitness and tactical discipline.
Uganda Golf Union President, Dr. Jackson Were, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “The POA tournament will help us understand what we must do together with all the stakeholders in delivering a historic Uganda Open. It is for this reason that I call upon all golfers, amateur and pro, to register and play in POA—because there will be no better chance for one to test himself or herself.”
Lugazi Hills, formerly known as Mehta Golf Club, was established in 1996 and has evolved into a top-tier 18-hole course.
