‎Mad Bus runners discover a different side of Kampala

‎
‎If there is one thing that sounds almost impossible, it is the idea of dozens of people willingly leaving the comfort of their beds to go for a run at midnight. Yet, just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, that is exactly what happened in Butabika as members of the Mad Bus Running Club gathered for their second Midnight Run of 2026.
‎
‎The event, powered by Tusker Lite, brought together more than 50 runners from Mutungo and across Kampala, united by a shared love for fitness, community and adventure. For the beer brand, whose footprint in Uganda’s running scene continues to grow, the midnight run reinforced its commitment to creating lifestyle experiences that go beyond the finish line.
‎
‎
‎“Running has become much more than a sporting activity. It is a lifestyle, a community and a culture, and that’s exactly why Tusker Lite continues to invest in it. Whether it’s the Tusker Lite marathons or unique experiences like the Mad Bus Midnight Run, we’re proud to support spaces where people can challenge themselves, connect with others and celebrate every achievement responsibly,” said Sandra Againe, the Tusker Lite Brand Manager.

‎The night’s participants were split into three groups. The more adventurous runners tackled the 22-kilometre route, while another group took on the 10-kilometre course. A third group chose to walk the distance, proving that the night was never about speed but about showing up.
‎
‎Each group had a designated “Bus Driver” experienced runners tasked with making sure no participant was left behind. Rather than leading from the front, the Bus Drivers stayed at the back of their groups, ensuring everyone’s pace was accommodated and that every runner finished safely.
‎
‎Before setting off, organiser and running enthusiast Robert Kabushenga, who jokingly introduces himself simply as “a farmer”, reminded participants that this was not the night to test their limits recklessly.
‎
‎”This is a serious run,” he told the crowd during the briefing. “If you feel you cannot continue, don’t force it. Get into the security vehicle or the ambulance. We want everyone to finish safely.”
‎
‎True to his word, Kabushenga remained behind all the groups throughout the night, ensuring every registered runner completed the route safely before he crossed the finish line himself.
‎
‎Running through Kampala after midnight revealed a side of the city few people ever get to experience. The usual daytime traffic had given way to long stretches of quiet roads. Streetlights illuminated neighbourhoods that are often rushed through during the day, while distant city lights painted the skyline in soft orange and white. Instead of the sound of car horns, conversations between runners and the rhythm of steady footsteps filled the night air.
‎
‎
‎For many participants, the run was as much about the experience as it was about the kilometres covered. Friends encouraged one another through difficult stretches, strangers quickly became training partners, and every completed kilometre was met with cheers from fellow runners.
‎
‎The journey eventually brought everyone back to Red Chilli Hideout, where the evening transformed into a relaxed social gathering. With the hard work done, runners swapped stories from the road, laughed about the night’s memorable moments and caught up over refreshments. Many celebrated their achievement with an ice-cold Tusker Lite, which had been specially discounted for participants, bringing a fitting close to a night that blended fitness, friendship and responsible celebration.
‎
‎
‎As Uganda’s running community continues to grow, experiences like the Mad Bus Midnight Run demonstrate that running is becoming more than just exercise. It is creating communities, introducing people to new ways of experiencing their city and proving that sometimes, the most memorable kilometres are the ones covered long after the rest of Kampala has gone to sleep.
