Women football coaches are happy for the increased number of girls playing football, but are concerned of their consistence in playing.

According to Hadijah Namuyanja (Lady Mourinho), a CAF A license holder, there are many talented girls but cannot see their careers blossom due to inconsistency.

“We have little competitions for women football to ensure consistent playing for these girls and thus ending up quitting. We are happy that at least Fresh Diary came to support us here in schools and we look forward for more financial support to have many women football competitions,” she noted.

On Saturday, nine schools converged at Old Kampala SSS play grounds for the 2019 Kampala region Girls football qualifiers for the Fresh Dairy-sponsored Ball games 1 due May 4-11 at Mbale SSS.

In February, Fresh Dairy announced a Shs3.5bn five-year sponsorship to the national Ball Games 1; catering for Basketball (Boys and Girls), Football Girls U20, Rugby 15s (Boys), Hockey (Boys and Girls), Table Tennis (Boys and Girls), Badminton (Boys and Girls) and Tennis (Boys and Girls).

Nabisunsa Girls SSS is one of the new schools taking part in Girls football for the first time and Coach Amstrong Manano believes the start is good.

“The girls have talents but need motivation and encouragement,” he said. Kawempe Muslim SSS Coach Ayub Khalifan noticed that the number of girls playing football has grown but the quality has lowered -suggesting need to train coaches who handle these girls at the tender age because many lack basics of the game. The schools that partook in the one-day Kampala regional qualifiers are; Kawempe Muslim, Uganda martyrs High school, Lubaga Girls, Makerere College, Nabisunsa Girls, Gadafi Integrated, Katuuso community, St Peters SSS, Nsambya and St Joseph Girls.
