The Crested Cranes took a significant step toward WAFCON 2026 qualification with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Ethiopia’s Lucy in the first leg at home, courtesy of late goals from Zaina Namuleme and Fazila Ikwaput.
In a match where both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, Uganda suffered an early setback in the 29th minute when defender Bridget Nabisalu was forced off due to injury, making way for Phiona Nabulime.
Despite a few attempts from Resty Nanziri, Ikwaput, and Namuleme before halftime, Ethiopia’s defense held firm.
The second half saw an improved attacking display from Uganda, with Ikwaput coming close but denied by the Ethiopian goalkeeper.
In search of a breakthrough, Head Coach Sheryl Botes made a double substitution after the hour mark, introducing Resty Kobusobozi and Agnes Nabukenya for Phiona Nabbumba and captain Viola Nambi.
Ethiopia had opportunities of their own but found Uganda’s goalkeeper Ruth Aturo in fine form.
Just as the game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, Namuleme won a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 89th minute. She stepped up and delivered a stunning strike to put Uganda ahead.
With five minutes added to stoppage time, Ikwaput doubled the lead with a calm finish inside the box, ensuring the Crested Cranes take a commanding 2-0 advantage into the return leg in Addis Ababa on February 26.
The aggregate winner will advance to the next qualification round.
