The 2019 National Novice boxing championship is underway this week at Kira road Police play ground in Kamwokya.
All active Uganda boxing federation (UBF) legit member clubs are expected to field boxers in each of the junior, youth, elite as well women categories.
According to Moses Muhangi, the UBF President, all is set for the championship that will run for a week starting with medical examination held this Tuesday and weigh-in on Wednesday.
“We expect more that 500 boxers and 10,000 spectators to grace this year’s championship. We shall have action on August 1-5 and rest on August 6 before finals on August 8. However, on August 6 (rest day), we shall instead hold the National team (Bombers) elimination trials at the same venue where the winners will be named on the final list of the Bombers team to All Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco this August,” Muhangi noted on Monday as UBF unveiled a timely partnership with BetOn at their offices in Lugogo.
The betting firm extended equipment (boxing gear) for the Novice championship worth over Shs20m; including gloves, head gear, shorts and shirts among others.
“By attracting such big companies, it shows that organization has returned to boxing after getting rid of selfish administrators. We look forward to attracting more sponsors to the sport –that is why we insist on proper administration and organization from the club level. The equipment given to us covers a big part of our budget and we thank BetOn,” added Muhangi, who revealed that the sponsorship had been negotiated by a marketing firm, Black Excellence on behalf of the federation. The Novice championship produces the boxers for the Intermediates and later the National Open.
