National Hockey League: Wananchi, Weatherhead register huge wins in opening matchday

Wananchi and Weatherhead men’s sides ran riot against their matchday one opponents as the National Hockey League returned at Lugogo after over a one-year hiatus.

Both sides posted 12-00 victories with Wananchi, also title holders beating league debutants Weatherhead Vikings while Weatherhead came good against own sister club, Weatherhead Historicals.

For Wananchi, Raskara Innocent and Jerome Owori both bagged hattricks to put Vikings to the sword. Thomas Opio and James Labori scored a brace each while Jordan Achaye and Jackson Musinguzi had a goal apiece.

In their triumph over Historicals, Weatherhead’s display was headlined by 2019 season’s joint top scorer Timothy Ntumba scored five goals in their opening fixture. Arnold Kasumba had a brace while Ashiraf Tumwesigye, Moses Tushabe, Brian Okodi, Peter Elolu and Topher Kyamanya had a goal each.

In other games, City Lions condemned KHC Stallions to a 1-2 defeat with Mohammad Ali and Andrew Lubega scoring for the former. Richard Semo scored KHC’s goal.

Debutants, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) lost 1-5 to fellow university outfit, Makerere (MUK). Kenneth Tafuga scored the only goal for the Nakawa based institute while Graham Mawejje, Mathias Akanyiharo, Elbbert Bagasha (2) and Abbot Birungi were on target for MUK who are making their second season in the league.

In the only women’s match that will be played in the opening weekend, DCU (Deliverance Church Uganda) and Rhino settled for a 2-2 draw. Sharon Oroma and Lucky Akello were on target for DCU while Carol Nakazzi and Gloria Amony scored for Rhino.

Action continues today, Sunday 9th April 2021 at Lugogo with only one card as  debutants KHC Originals take on Rockets at 5 p.m.
