Onyango Revels In PSL Victory

Over the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned Absa Premiership (PSL) champions in dramatic fashion after rivals Kaizer Chiefs stumbled at the final hurdle.

Sundowns, home to Uganda Cranes Captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango beat Black Leopards 3-0 at the Dobsonville Stadium in South Africa to clinch the title by two points after Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC.

Onyango has been sidelined in the past few games due to injury but the Brazilians managed to claim their third league title in a row.

The championship was also Onyango’s seventh PSL title. He also won three times in a row with Super Sport.

After becoming one of the league’s most decorated player, Onyango is still reveling in the weekend heroics and he now seeks to achieve more in the ‘Madiba Land.’

“It was a sweet win for us,” Onyango said in one of the local TV interviews. “Chiefs are our big rivals so coming on top of them is always is a good feeling,” Onyango added.

“I am happy for the entire team and myself. We worked hard this season despite the current global health situation,” Onyango noted.

Before the weekend win, Sundowns had never been atop the table but they defied odds in the post-lockdown age to clinch glory.

However, playing behind closed doors seemed a strength thing for Onyango despite the overall outcome of the campaign.
“We are not used to playing without fans; it’s the small teams which have few fans who are a bit comfortable with it. We had to get used to it though,” Onyango added.

Sundowns are currently still in camp as they await a cup fixture.
