Optimistic Lady Cricket Cranes leave for Genocide tourney

Uganda’s female cricket side Lady Cricket Cranes were on Friday flagged off to Kigali, Rwanda for the 25thGenocide (Kwibuka) memorial tournament set for Sunday, June 16-23.

The tourney held since 2014, is organized in honor of sportsmen and women who died during the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

This year’s edition attained full T20 international recognition from international body and will contribute points to international ranks for the four participating nations.

With defending champions Kenya snubbing this year’s tournament, Uganda will be seeking to win the champion after 2014 and 2016 victories.

National council of sports (NCS) Assistant secretary general David Katende flagged the team blended with both youth and experienced players for the nine-day event.

The team comprises of six outstanding players from the Girls Cricket Week (GCW) that ended last month and eight players fresh from the International cricket Council (ICC) Womens World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.

The squad:

Rita Musamali (Aziz Damani), Immaculate Nakisuyi (Aziz Damani) Joyce Mary Apio (Olila High School), Stephannie Nampiina (Aziz Damani), Esther Ilukor (Olila High), Damalie Busingye (Olila High), Evelyn Anyipo (Soroti Challengers), Sarah Walaza (Jinja SS), Mary Nyende Kagoya (Aziz Damani), Allako Proscovia (Olila High), Hildred Anyingo (Olila High), Susan Kakai (Jinja SS), Gloria Obukor (Olila High), Christine Anayo (Light SS).

Reserves: Shubaiker Naigaga (Jinja SS), Janet Nakiranda (Victoria High).
