On Monday evening at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ugandan sprinter Tarsis Orogot emerged victorious in heat 2 of the men’s 200m event.
The US-based athlete clocked in at 20.32 seconds, narrowly beating Bahamian runner McCoy, who finished at 20.35 seconds, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Trailing behind were Brazilian Correa with a time of 20.41 seconds and Jamaican Hudson at 20.53 seconds.
In other heats, the US’s Bednarek dominated heat 4 with an impressive time of 19.96 seconds, while Liberian Joseph Fahnbulleh claimed victory in heat 1 with a time of 20.20 seconds.
Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo led heat 3, finishing in 20.10 seconds, and US sprinter Erriyon Knighton won heat 5 with a time of 19.99 seconds, closely followed by Zimbabwe’s Tapiwanashe Makarawu, who posted a time of 20.07 seconds.
This marks a significant achievement for Uganda, as the nation hasn’t seen a male sprinter compete in the Olympics since Davis Kamoga’s bronze medal performance at the Atlanta 1996 Games.
The semi-finals for the men’s 200m are scheduled for Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
