Uganda Premier League
Police FC 1-1 Bright Stars FC
Omondi Stadium, Lugogo
Tuesday, 15-06-2021

Joseph Janjali scored a late free kick as Bright Stars snatched a draw away to Police FC at Lugogo on Tuesday.

With the league resuming after 25-day, the former Vipers SC forward slotted in from outside the box after Denis Rukundo had brought down Joseph Akandwanaho.

It was a a sucker punch of sorts to the Cops who looked to have done enough to see out victory following Tonny Mawejje’s early poke-in from close range after Simon Tamale had pushed Duncan Sseninde’s free-kick into the danger zone.

For Police who have now gone seven league games minus victory, the draw will feel like a loss after defending their lead for 80 minutes.

The started strongly with Mawejje converting their first real chance.

Henry Kisekka who started ahead of Ben Ocen and Derrick Kakoza could not justify his selection as he failed to turn home Brian Mululi’s well-weighted through ball.

In a turst half that was dominated by the Cops, Mawejje shot weakly at Tamale before Hassan Muhamud nearly caught the custodian out with a clever free kick which kissed off the top of the crossbar.

Bright Stars have enjoyed a magnificent second round, one that has seen them lose just once in 12 games but looked second best until late in the second half when they upped the tempo in search of a leveller.

Janjali forced Tamale into a low save, Methodius Jungu headed straight at the custodian.

When Warren Bule pulled his effort from just outside the box wide late in the contest, the game looked to be headed in the hosts favour only for Janjali to pop up with the leveller two minutes from time.

The result takes Police into 5th with 42 points, one ahead of Bright Stars with both side having played 27 games.

In their next assignments, Police are away to Onduparaka next Tuesday while Bright Stars host Kyetume the following day.
