Rams and Warriors are off the mark in the 2022 Nile Special Rugby Premier League season after they each won their games on Saturday in what was match day five of the two-round campaign.
Both sides picked victories on the road with Rams beating Rhinos 03-06 at Legends Grounds in Kampala whilst Warriors beat Impis 10-14 at the Makerere rugby grounds dubbed Graveyard to taste first victory in round one of the season.
At Legends, Nelson Mandela was the main man for Rams as his two penalty kicks in either halfs earned his side victory on foreign soil.
Mandela gave his side a first half lead through a penalty kick delivered in the 23rd minute, moments after Rhinos’ Deen Kinyera was shown a yellow card over foul play.
However, in the 49th minute, Rhinos evened matters with a penalty of their own but Mandela’s 63rd minute penalty reinstated the visitors’ lead in what later proved to be winning points for Rams who are ninth on the 10-team table with five points, six behind fifth placed Rhinos.
At the Graveyard, Warriors managed one try and three penalty kicks against Impis’ try, conversion and penalty to claim a 10-14 win on the road and their first of the season.
Erasmus Aredo crossed the white wash for Warriors while Richard Kinyai had two penalties and Joel F. had a penalty to his name whilst for Impis Muhumuza Ariho scored the only try converted by Jerome and the penalty kick was put in by Kinyai.
Meanwhile, Heathens and Stanbic Black Pirates remaking the only unbeaten sides in the men’s top tier division after they both picked wins away from home.
Log leaders Heathens beat Mongers 03-46 at the House of Payne in Entebbe which was the biggest score margin of the day while Pirates beat Toyota Buffaloes 03-39 at Kyadondo Rugby Club in Kampala. Heathens now have 24 points, just one above second placed Pirates while Mongers are fourth with 14 points. Buffaloes are sixth with 10 points.
After beating Hippos 10-34 at Jinja Dam Waters, title holders Kobs have climbed to third on the table with 17 points while the former are seventh with nine points.
