The Uganda Women’s Rugby activity plan for September 2019 to September 2020 has been put in place.

Women Representative at the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) Executive Committee Regina Lunyolo confirmed that the plan was tabled in a meeting held at the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) secretariat in Lugogo.

The meeting was attended by women rugby stakeholders. “It is better to understand where we are and where we want to go. Currently, the rugby game for girls is not popular in some areas of the nation. We hope to grow the numbers through mass participation. We also want to engage schools through Physical Education teachers,” Lunyolo noted in reference to grass root development.

Key in the plan is improving visibility of the game, attract retired players back into the game and use non-monetary incentives to motivate players, grow numbers of female rugby players, organize more tournaments for female teams and take the game to the grass root.

Lunyolo believes that retired players can help in capacity building if they are encouraged to take up coaching roles.

She also thinks that active players especially those on national teams should be number one ambassadors of the game. Between September and November, the ladies teams will be engaged in the Rugby 10s clashes while 15s will be played from January to April 2020.

May to July is the international 15s season with the local 7s league and franchise also due then. The Uganda women’s national team was started way back in 2003 as a fitness group.
