Kampala is set to host Uganda’s first-ever international invitational rugby sevens tournament, the Kampala International 7s, from May 31 to June 1, 2025, at Kings Park Arena. Sponsored by Stanbic Bank Uganda, the tournament will welcome elite teams from across Africa and beyond, promising high-octane rugby action and a pioneering social impact initiative.
But this event goes beyond the sport. Under the theme Greening the Game, the Kampala International 7s is launching a bold environmental campaign aimed at planting 7 million trees over the next seven years. Dubbed “One Try, One Tree”, the initiative will see a tree planted for every try scored throughout the tournament, turning sporting excellence into a force for environmental change.
“This tournament is more than just sport — it’s a statement,” the organisers announced. “We are linking on-field action with real-world impact through our official CSR campaign,” said one of the organizers.
The tournament and its sustainability campaign are aligned with Stanbic Bank Uganda’s environmental principles, World Rugby’s Strategic Plan 2030, and Uganda’s broader climate goals. A symbolic tree planting by team captains and a high-level stakeholder forum will kick off the green campaign.
Organisers are positioning the Kampala International 7s as one of the most eco-conscious sporting events on the continent, hoping to set a benchmark for how sports can be leveraged for sustainable development.
