USA-based Ugandan professional boxer Sharif ‘The Lion’ Bogere paid a courtesy visit to the UBF secretariat in Lugogo on Thursday as the 2019 schools boxing championship was launched. The Light weight boxer, who arrived in Uganda early this week, intends to work with the federation to connect boxers heading for professional career to top promoters as well as nurturing the young boxers in the three-week stay. “Things were turf by the time I left in 2007 but now I see boxing is back under president Muhangi, this is huge! There is no need to vanish now but again, government should put more money in the sport so that boxers can have maximum concentration in search for international medals and also limit early entry into professional ranks when they are unprepared. I will talk to coaches this Friday and also meet the national team boxers on Sunday to share experience with them,” noted the former Bombers captain, who vanished from camp in 2007 to settle in USA for the last 12 years where he currently fights under Mayweather promotions LTD. This year’s schools championships are on next weekend March 23-31 at MTN Arena, Lugogo with over 50 schools set to compete. Uganda boxing federation (UBF) president Moses Muhangi said that boxers under 17 years of age will be eligible to participate and these will first go through comprehensive medical examination. Bweyogere SSS are the defending champions after coming on top last year and Bogere will be in stands to cheer his former schools he fought for; Dynamic SSS, Mukono and Kololo high as they seek lost glory.
