Silverbacks Head To Egypt For FIBA Afrobasket 2021 Qualifiers

The Uganda senior men’s national basketball team, Silverbacks are set to travel to Egypt on Saturday ahead of the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers scheduled for November 27-29 in
Alexandria at the Kamal Shalaby Venue.

The team was officially flagged off on Friday by NCS and FUBA officials at the Cooper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo.

This will be the first window of the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 Qualifiers with the last and final one set for February 19-21, 2021.

The Silverbacks were drawn in Group E alongside hosts Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde  that recently attained a ticket from an invitational tournament in Cameroon.

There are five qualifying groups and the top three from each group and a wildcard will form the 16 teams that will qualify for the FIBA Afrobasket 2021 in Rwanda from August 24 to September 5.

Seven locally based players, who have been undergoing intense training for the past four weeks, will be joined by their five foreign-based teammates for a training camp before the
tournament and will be under head coach George Galanopolous who will be assisted by Mandy Juruni together with Mike Schmitz and Andrew Tendo.

The foreign based players include Robinson Opong Odoch, Deng Gau, Ishmail
Wainright, Eric Rwahire and Emmanuel Mugenga.
