SMACK League returns with Season 4

Teams greet each other before kickoff

There has been gradual growth in the SMACK League; from 12 teams in 2016 to now 19 and the St. Mary’s College, Kisubi Old Boys initiative is undoubtedly a force to reckon with.

Played twice a month at Legends Rugby Grounds over a calendar year, the league returned this Sunday with Season 4.

“We are looking forward to a brilliant season. Our target is top 3. As back to back champions, we are looking forward to Season 4,” Bernard Mukasa, Devil’s ex-coach told the media on Thursday during the unveiling of new sponsors, roadmap and the new season at the Legends Rugby Grounds. The league’s Chief Marketing Officer Hillary Baguma said the new league season will draw attention to women and girls. “Last year was for the needy. This season, our target is to reach out to thousands of Women and Girls under the Ladies First Campaign. Our outreach is going to base on entrepreneurial development and health,” he said.

Baguma explained that whereas SMACK is a male single school, women play a special role in raising the boy child. “We were only boys at SMACK but we recognize the importance of women in our lives,” he said.

The SMACK League President Moses Tumusiime said that the vision is to set a networking, mutually supportive and healthy platform for former students of SMACK.

“It takes four years for a team to join. You must have left SMACK four years ago for you to come as a team. After those years, we think you joined University or tertiary institution and that means you are either out and ready to network or you are about to finish school,” Tumusiime explained, lightly adding that: “We don’t want young people coming here to make the old run around. Season 4 will see the league further evolve into a well structured social platform, get bigger, better and more competitive.”

Tumusiime also welcomed new league entrants, Lycans (Class of 2015) the league is sponsored by Cavendish University, Uganda Breweries Limited, Soccanet, Legends Rugby Grounds, Bernoulli Engineering, 8 Winx Hotel and Photo Factory among others.
