South Africa confirmed their place in the knockout stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 on Monday night, while Egypt strengthened their chances of progression after holding Angola to a goalless draw in a hard-fought group stage encounter.
Bafana Bafana booked their ticket to the round of 16 with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Zimbabwe in Marrakech, showing resilience under pressure to secure the points they needed. Egypt, meanwhile, picked up a valuable point in Agadir that keeps them firmly in contention as the group stage approaches its conclusion.
South Africa’s win over Zimbabwe was decisive. An early goal from Tshepang Moremi set the tone before a thrilling contest unfolded. Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis were also on target as South Africa twice took the lead and ultimately did enough to see off a spirited Zimbabwe side.
Despite late drama, including an own goal that brought Zimbabwe back into the game, South Africa defended resolutely in the closing minutes to claim all three points. The victory ensured Bafana Bafana finished second in their group with six points, guaranteeing progression to the knockout phase.
Egypt’s path to the next round also remains on track after a disciplined defensive display against Angola. While the Pharaohs were largely second-best on the night, their organisation and composure at the back proved decisive in securing a clean sheet and a crucial point.
Angola pressed for long spells and created the better chances, but Egypt goalkeeper Shobeir and a well-drilled backline stood firm to frustrate the Palancas Negras. The draw leaves Egypt well placed as the competition moves towards the decisive group fixtures, with qualification to the round of 16 firmly within reach.
By contrast, Zimbabwe’s elimination was confirmed despite an energetic performance against South Africa, while Angola were left to rue missed opportunities that could yet prove costly in their bid to progress.
