Barcelona forward Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Spain dominated much of the contest but struggled to break down Argentina’s disciplined defense. Pedro Porro’s cross was kept alive by Nico Williams, allowing Torres to finish past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Spain controlled possession and created numerous opportunities, registering 20 shots compared to Argentina’s two. Martínez produced several crucial saves to keep Argentina in the match until Torres finally found the breakthrough.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time following a second yellow card, leaving the defending champions to play the entirety of extra time with 10 men.
Lionel Messi, making what was billed as his final World Cup appearance, came closest for Argentina late in extra time, but Spain’s defense held firm to preserve the lead.
Tensions boiled over after the final whistle as players from both teams became involved in a brief confrontation. Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after shoving Spain midfielder Gavi during the altercation.
The final also attracted significant global attention off the pitch. FIFA President Gianni Infantino watched the match alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, while several world leaders, members of Spain’s royal family, and numerous celebrities attended the event.
The occasion featured an elaborate opening ceremony, including performances by Jennifer Hudson and Robbie Williams, while a star-studded halftime show extended the break to more than 27 minutes.
Spain’s victory marks their second men’s FIFA World Cup triumph, ending Argentina’s reign as world champions and capping an impressive tournament campaign with a hard-fought victory in the final.
