In his address to the nation on Sunday on the way forward to curb the sharp rising positive cases of covid-19, President Yoweri Museveni revealed that sports activities will continue but without fans.
“Sports events will continue with strict observance of SOPs without spectators,” President Museveni said in his televised address to the nation on the same.
However, failure to adhere to the SOPs and the like will lead to a total ban.
Sports activities were reinstated in September last year after about a six-month haitus due to Covid-19 disruptions.
Although some domestic sports activities were reinstated, some federations/associations are yet to reinstate games due to the high cost of running activities in the current times.
Even after play was restarted, some local sports governing bodies have implemented tight measures themselves to curb the spread of the pandemic.
FUFA banned fans in stadiums a few days ago, National Basketball League was suspended by NCS while Uganda Cricket Association banned all domestic events after some positive cases were reported in the Lady Cricket Cranes team that was set to travel to Rwanda for the Kwibuka Women’s International Twenty20 Tournament in Kigali.
As of today, there are 52935 reported positive cases, 383 deaths and 43487 recoveries in Uganda.
Summary of key take aways from President Museveni’s address:
*All schools and other institutions of learning to close for 42 days effective tomorrow 08th.06.2021 by 8 a.m.
*All teachers must be vaccinated before they enter school premises.
* Communual prayers are banned for 42 days. Online prayers are encouraged.
*Public or cultural gathering are suspended for 42 days with the exception of cabinet meetings after thorough screening.
*Travel from category A countries (India) is suspended.
*Agricultural activities to continue because they don’t encourage crowding.
*Non agricultural activities allowed to continue are; factories, malls, supermarkets with strict adherence to the MoH guidelines.
*Gathering points such as factories, plantations and taxi parks are allowed to operate with strict SOPs in place.
*Marriage ceremonies and other functions are allowed but to have only 20 participants.
*House parties are suspended .
* Number of persons at funerals should not exceed 20.
*Monthly and weekly markets are suspended for 42 days.
* All public transport from district to district is suspended for 42 days by 10th of June 2021, except between Kampala and Wakiso.
*Essential and emergency transport is allowed.
*Public transport is allowed within one district.
*Cargo trucks are allowed carry only two people.
* Bars and discos to remain closed.
*All sports activities are allowed to continue without spectators but players must have a PCR test.
*All work places must adhere to the COVID-19 SOPs, encourage people to work from home, encourage 30% presence of staff to work at one point.

*Private cars should have only 3 passengers, should only move within the district, inter district is suspended.
*Ambulances are allowed to operate normally.
*Malls should close by 7 p.m.
*Pharmacy can operate beyond 7 p.m.
*Food markets should close by 7 p.m.
*Lodges should operate without bars and with strict adherence to the SOPs because drunkards can’t understand SOPs.
*Curfew remains at 9 p.m to 5:30 a.m.
*Boda bodas to operate until 6 p.m.
*All the above directives, take immediate effect .
