Cricket Uganda has officially unveiled Steve Tikolo as the new head coach of the national men’s team, the Cricket Cranes, following a competitive international recruitment process that attracted more than 75 applicants from across the cricketing world.
The former Kenyan international signed a three-year contract and returns for his third coaching stint with Cricket Uganda. Tikolo previously served as batting coach between 2012 and 2013 before later taking on the head coach role from 2016 to 2019.
He replaces Abhay Sharma, whose tenure as Cricket Cranes head coach ended in October last year.
Tikolo’s appointment concludes a five-month search during which assistant coach Jackson Ogwang temporarily guided the national team while the federation undertook an extensive recruitment process to identify the best candidate to lead the next phase of Uganda’s cricket development.
The search for a new head coach began on January 26 and attracted significant international interest. More than 75 applicants from at least 14 countries applied for the role.
The countries represented included South Africa, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh, among others.
Following an initial screening process, 10 candidates were shortlisted for the next stage of evaluation, representing a diverse mix of global cricket expertise.
The shortlisted candidates then participated in virtual panel interviews conducted via Zoom, where they presented their coaching philosophies, strategic plans for the national team, and approaches to building a sustainable high-performance environment for Uganda.
The interview panel consisted of five representatives from Cricket Uganda, including the Acting Chief Executive Officer and officials from the High Performance and Operations departments.
