Tanzania ends Uganda World Cup hopes

Uganda 1-2 Tanzania (Agg: 2-4)

Tanzania ended Uganda’s world Cup hopes after falling to Tanzania 2-1 on Saturday at the StarTimes stadium, Lugogo in the return leg of the FIFA U20 Women World Cup Qualifiers. Uganda had fallen 2-1 in the first leg in Tanzania to lose 4-2 on aggregate.

Uganda needed to win 1-0 and book a place to the next round going into the Saturday home fixture. Kampala Queens midfielder Phiona Nabbumba put Uganda in a 48th minute lead when he tapped in from close after a neat pass from Juliet Nalukenge.

The Olivia Mbekeka’s side was on course before Diana Msewa leveled matters in the 59th minute off Aisha Khamis Masaka assist. Clement Opa cemented Tanzania’s place in the next round with a free kick from 25 yards after a foul on Khamis by Shadia Nankya.

Uganda whose goal keeper Daphine Nyayenga was up to the task a number of times, will also rue missed opportunities especially when Nalukenge had her tap in from Fauzia Najjemba cleared off the line by Tanzania’s Emeliana Isaya Mdimu. Tanzania will now play winner between Senegal and Sierra Leone at the next stage.
