Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire will lock horns with West African neighbours Burkina Faso in the final Round of 16 fixture at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, with the clash scheduled for January 6 at the Grand Stade Marrakech.
Kick-off is set for 20h00 local time (19h00 GMT) in what will be the first-ever AFCON knockout meeting between the two sides, despite their long-standing regional rivalry and shared 545-kilometre border.
The Ivorians and Burkinabè have previously met twice at the Africa Cup of Nations, both encounters coming in the group stages of the 2010 and 2012 editions. The first meeting in Lubango ended in a goalless draw, while Côte d’Ivoire claimed a 2-0 victory two years later thanks to a Salomon Kalou strike and a late Bakary Koné own goal. Notably, the Elephants have kept clean sheets in both AFCON meetings.
Overall, the two nations have faced each other 20 times across all competitions, with Côte d’Ivoire holding the edge with eight wins compared to Burkina Faso’s three, while nine matches have ended in draws.
Côte d’Ivoire arrive in Marrakech on the back of a strong group-stage campaign, finishing unbeaten with wins over Mozambique and Gabon, and a draw against Cameroon. Under coach Emerse Faé, the reigning champions are unbeaten in their last seven AFCON matches and have developed a habit of late goals, with eight of their last nine tournament strikes coming in the second half.
However, history poses a challenge. No defending AFCON champion has won a Round of 16 match since the tournament adopted its current format, with Egypt in 2010 the last title holders to reach the quarter-finals. Côte d’Ivoire themselves failed to get out of the group stage in 2017 as defending champions, making this just the second time they have progressed beyond the groups while holding the title.
Still, the Ivorians boast an impressive knockout pedigree. They have not lost an AFCON knockout match in open play since 2013 and have won their last three knockout games in normal time, all during their triumphant 2023 campaign. A win on Tuesday would see them reach the quarter-finals for the 12th time in their history.
Key figures such as Amad Diallo and Franck Kessié have been central to Côte d’Ivoire’s attacking output, while Faé remains unbeaten at AFCON since taking charge during the last edition.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, progressed from their group with victories over Equatorial Guinea and Sudan, despite a defeat to Algeria. The Stallions have reached the Round of 16 in every edition since the stage was introduced, advancing in 2021 but falling at this hurdle in 2023.
Although they are yet to win a Round of 16 match in open play, Burkina Faso have shown resilience in knockout football, including a penalty shoot-out victory over Gabon in 2021. Dango Ouattara has been their standout performer so far in Morocco, contributing two goals and leading the team in chances created and dribbles completed.
