Djibouti hosted a key African Union workshop on sustainable sports development this week, with Uganda represented by the National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary, Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel.
The two-day event, organized under the African Union Commission, focused on popularizing the AU’s political framework for sports development. It brought together Directors of Sports from 24 countries in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Development Region 4, aiming to strengthen cooperation among member states.
Dr. Ogwel, who serves as the AUSC Advisory Chair, presented the council’s strategic plan for 2024-2028. He emphasized the plan’s focus on reinforcing sports governance and leveraging sports as a tool for social cohesion and development across Africa.
“Sports can be a unifying force and a driver of economic and social growth,” Dr. Ogwel said, reflecting Uganda’s own recent success in co-hosting the CHAN football tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda has also embarked on a significant program to enhance sports infrastructure, talent development, and its capacity to host major continental events.
The workshop was inaugurated by Djibouti’s Secretary of State for Sports, Hassan Mohamed Kamil, and described by Sports Secretary-General
