Uganda Cranes secured a slim but crucial 1-0 victory over Burundi in the first leg of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers at Hamz Stadium, Nakibubo, on Thursday evening.
Striker Isaac Ogwang’s lone goal in the 35th minute proved to be the decisive moment, giving Uganda an edge in the two-legged tie. Ogwang fired a precise low shot into the bottom-right corner following a well-placed pass from Saidi Mayanja.
Uganda dominated the early proceedings, creating several scoring opportunities. In the 11th minute, Jude Ssemugabi had a chance to lob the ball over Burundi’s onrushing goalkeeper but missed the target. Moments later, Ssemugabi rounded the keeper, only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Burundi defender Olivier Dushime.
Shafik Nana Kwikiriza also came close, heading narrowly over the bar in the 23rd minute. The breakthrough finally arrived when Ogwang converted Uganda’s persistent attacking play into a goal.
Burundi responded strongly after the halftime break, mounting significant pressure on Uganda’s defense. However, the Cranes showcased resilience, holding on for the win.
The return leg between the two teams is set to take place at the same venue on Sunday, where Uganda will aim to seal their qualification.
While Uganda has already qualified as co-hosts of the CHAN 2024 tournament alongside Tanzania and Kenya, Burundi is fighting to advance to the final qualification round.
