After a sobering 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their CHAN 2024 opener, the Uganda Cranes are looking to bounce back in a do-or-die encounter against Guinea on Friday night at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The Group C match is pivotal for Uganda, who are eager to break their historical pattern of early CHAN exits. The biennial tournament, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, presents a golden opportunity for the Cranes to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Cranes head coach Morley Byekwaso remains upbeat despite the rocky start.
“We’ve put the first game behind us. Football has its ups and downs, but what matters is how you respond,” said Byekwaso during a pre-match press conference. “We’re ready to give everything tomorrow. The boys are mentally strong, and we’re committed to making Uganda proud.”
The coach urged fans to pack the stadium, underlining the impact of home support:
“Our supporters mean everything to us. We need them to stand with us. Their energy can lift this team and drive us forward.”
While the squad is mostly fit, midfielders Emmanuel Anyama and Marvin Youngman are being monitored due to minor injuries. Otherwise, the team is said to be in high spirits and physically prepared.
Defender and third-choice captain Rogers Torach echoed the coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s determination:
“We’re not dwelling on the past. Everyone is ready to fight for the badge. We want to make our fans proud and keep our dream alive.”
Uganda’s recent 1-0 victory over Guinea in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers adds to the squad’s confidence heading into this key fixture.
With two more group games still to be played, a win on Friday could reignite Uganda’s CHAN 2024 journey and inspire belief in what remains of the tournament.
