Uganda Cricket Association are among the nominees for the 2022 edition of the ICC Development Awards, the global cricket governing body has confirmed via their website.
Uganda Cricket Association who are the Africa Regional Winners are nominated in the ICC Digital Fan Engagement of the Year category alongside Bahrain Cricket Federation (Asia Regional Winners), Japan Cricket Association (EAP Regional Winner) and Cricket Finland (Europe Regional Winner).
The ICC Digital Fan Engagement of the Year celebrates the outstanding innovative use of digital platforms, campaigns or technology by an Associate Member to drive engagement with fans and the wider community.
For Uganda, the hashtag #Cheer4BabyCricketCranes , a show of support to the boys junior cricket team during their engagements especially at the World Cup in West Indies has landed them the nomination.
In celebration of UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the ICC named Regional Winners across six award categories for the ICC Development Awards. The other five categories are; ICC Development Initiative of the Year, ICC Associate Member Men’s Performance of the Year, ICC Associate Member Women’s Performance of the Year, ICC Cricket 4 Good Social Impact Initiative of the Year and ICC Female Cricket Initiative of the Year.
The ICC Development Awards, established in 2002, honours the ground-breaking projects and programmes carried out by ICC Members to develop cricket in developing countries.
The 2022 awards span six categories, and after a year of exceptional innovation and growth, 23 ICC Member nations have been recognised as Regional Winners. These countries range from pioneering social impact programmes in Bhutan and Brazil to leading participation programmes in Indonesia and Serbia, as well as on-field accomplishments that have set new standards in international competition.
The Regional Winners turn into nominees for the Global Awards, chosen by a specialised voting panel made up of cricket legends Graeme Smith, Mel Jones, and Stafanie Taylor, as well as members of the ICC Full Members, ICC Partners, and the Media, with the Global Awards being presented to the winner of each regional category.
ICC General Manager, Development, William Glenwright hailed the success of ICC members while speaking on the announcement of Regional Winners in the ICC Development Awards.
“The ICC Development Awards have helped celebrate the successes of ICC Members for over 20 years, and each year it is striking to see how innovation, growth and inclusivity are always at the forefront of the projects being delivered. I’d like to congratulate the Regional Winners on their success, and wish them luck as we embark on the global voting process.
“As well as the remarkable development initiatives delivered during the last calendar year, 2022 saw more evidence of the continued narrowing of the gap in on-field competitiveness between Full and Associate Members, on account of a number of outstanding – and historic – performances in major ICC events and bilateral cricket.”
