Due to the second wave of Covid-19, sports activities in Uganda were again halted in June this year as a preventive measure to curb the spread of the pandemic.
As a result the preparations for the national cricket teams had to be halted especially for the safety of the players. Local activities also had to be suspended.
However, as the situation continues to improve, the ICC Africa communicated the way forward for the scheduled qualifying events for Africa.
The ladies continental engagement has been unaffected from the original plan with the ladies T20 Global World Cup Qualifiers still going to happen in Botswana from September 7th to 20th.
The U19 tournament that was supposed to be hosted by Nigeria has been moved to Kigali Rwanda from 28th Sept – 7th Oct. Uganda will compete against Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Namibia for the single slot to the World Cup in West Indies.
The men’s T20 qualifier scheduled for South Africa will be in Kigali from 14th – 23rd October. Uganda has been put in group E and will battle Ghana, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland and Seychelles for a single spot to move on to the next round of qualifiers.
A top place will earn Uganda an opportunity to take part in the Africa T20 finals aganist Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria and the winner of the Group B. This event will take place in Kigali Rwanda from 15th to 21st November.
“All these events will happen in Africa and we wait for official communication on the second round of the Challenge League B which is supposed to be in Jersey in September,” Uganda Cricket Association confirmed in a press release.
Uganda Cricket is making necessary preparations to make sure that the teams can start preparations immediately especially the girls who have a few weeks left to their tournament.
“We have made a formal request to National Council of Sports to allow them (players) to practise in a bubble and once we have the go ahead we shall proceed on the same,” another part of the press release said.
