Uganda defends Bosch regional badminton title without stars

The team that went to Russia for Junior world championship

Uganda approached the Bosch East African badminton challenge title defense last Friday without top stars that are in Russia for the 2019 world championship at the Kazan gymnastics center, Russia.

Nazurudheen Vaheed, Brian Kasirye, Samuel Waiswa, Fadilah Shamika, Husina Kobugabe, Tracy Naluwooza  and Arshath Mohammed are the players who were led by Rafi Mohammed following sponsorship from National Council of sports (NCS), Rafi Mohammed and Mohammed Vaheed.

The three-day championship that ended on Sunday at the Lugogo Arena attracted over 900 entries, according to Uganda badminton Association (UBA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Simon Mugabi.

City tyres and Bosch motor spare parts are the sponsors of the 2019 edition and it is the fifth year running they are bankrolling the biggest competition on the local badminton calendar.

Uganda has won the overall title for the last two years and came into the 2019 edition aiming for their third straight title. The hosts, Kenya, Ethiopia, India and Denmark are the countries that had entries this year.

The fourth edition climaxed with City Tyres, Mbogo High and Aisha Nakiyemba standing out in respective categories. Participants registered in seven categories including, Corporate, Universities, schools, nations, Professionals, Indian and China community.

In the Corporates, City Tyres defended the title after defeating Bigstar clothing company in the final. Mbogo High also defended the schools title after clinching all the underage categories save for U13.

Uganda’s seed one Aisha Nakiyemba beat the reigning champion Mbabazi Gladys in women singles while Kenya’s seed one thumped Uganda’s Friday Ataman to clinch men singles. Uganda defended the overall trophy for third consecutive time beating Kenya to second position.

U15 Girls- Nalutaaya Swabra (Mbogo High)

U15 Boys – Abo Oxlade Jordan (Kakungulu Memorial)

U19 Girls- Rajab Natasha (Mbogo High)

U19 Boys- Muyanja Amos (Kibuli SS)

University Category;

Women Singles- Gladys Mbabazi (UCU)

Men Singles- Davis Ssenono (UCU)

Men doubles- Derrick Odoch and Daniel Wanagaliya (UCU)

Women doubles- Meble Namakoye and Labella Nasasira (UCU)

Mixed Doubles- Davis Ssenono and Fatuma Nabirungi (UCU)

Overall winner of University category -UCU.

Corporates Corporates- City Tyres

Indians men doubles– Jose Abin and Francis Freejo.

Chinese– Longcong He and Qang Dilip
