Uganda Cranes impressive journey at the 2019 AFCON finals came to an end on Friday after a 1-0 loss to Senegal at the Cairo International stadium.

Sebastien Desabre, the Cranes Coach

Sadio Mane scored the only goal from a very good start in the opening minutes that sent the Lions of Teranga to the last eight of the competition.

The Liverpool forward scored from a clinical low finish before winning a penalty after being fouled by goal keeper Denis Onyango, who had already been booked. Mane, who had missed from the spot before against Kenya, saw his kick saved by Onyango who has referee to thank for not being sent off.

Senegal, who are seeking Afcon title, will meet Benin, who were surprise 4-1 winners over Morocco in penalties after 1-1 normal time draw on July 10. Despite their penalty miss, Mane is leading scorer at the tournament after netting his third, two of which have come as penalties.

Uganda’s build-up to the game was disrupted by bonuses pay dispute which saw payers boycott training on Tuesday. FUFA had to pay extra $6000 for the players to train on Wednesday and later Thursday. Emanuel Okwi and substitute Allan Kategegga, from a free kick, forced saves form Alfred Gomis as Senegal experienced saw them through.

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse

Uganda was not technically good and made many mistakes at the back than before at the tournament. Despite not making to the quarter finals for the first time since 1978, the Uganda Cranes produced some impressive performances that made the country proud and revealed some talented players.
