Teenager Reagan Joseph Akena, 16 is day one leader of the Amateur Open of the Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open following the conclusion of the first of the four rounds on Wednesday at Entebbe Golf Club’s par-71 golf course.
Akena, a handicap 4 member of Mehta Golf Club in Lugazi shot 1 under par 70 to lead a strong field of players who graced the event’s 80th staging and edging Entebbe’s Bulhan Matovu by one stroke.
Akena attributes his good round to excellent striking but says that he could have done better if his putting game was on point.
“My round today was good because I was striking well,” Akena, a Senior 3 student at Julian High School in Lugazi said adding that; “I was putting badly. However, I’ll handle the pressure on day two, I’ll do my best.”
Entebbe’s trio of Emmanuel Moko, Marvin Kibirige and Chanda Bwembya are tied for third with 2 over par 73.
To cap the leaderboard, five golfers are tied for sixth off 3 over par 74, that is; Michael Tumusiime, Joseph Kowa Ngobi, Korean K.J Lee, Otieno Ebill, and Zambia’s Musamba Kapoma.
Title holder John Lejirma is tied for 11th with six others off 4 over par 75. Uganda’s Joseph Cwinya-ai, a pre-tournament favorite is in the same bracket.
However, in the afternoon, a Par-3 Competition took place and it was won by Entebbe Club who came atop all the partners.
