Event: Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf Championship 2020

Duration: 26th November  – 6th December 2020.

Venue: Uganda Golf Club, Kitante

Schedule Of Events:
*Ladies Open: 26th to 28th November
*Amateur Gross: 1st to 4th December
*Amateur Subsidiary: 5th and 6th December
*Professionals: 3rd to 6th December

After lots of uncertainty that COVID-19 brought to the world of sports this year, the golfing community is delighted that the Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf Championship 2020 will finally happen, running from 26th November  – 6th December 2020 at Uganda Golf Club’s par-72 course Kitante.

Traditionally, the three-in-one tournament that marks its 79th edition this year is usually held in the last week of August, stretching to the first days of September but the continued ban on sports (due to COVID-19) between March and September this year meant that Uganda Golf Union (UGU) and its partners had to reschedule the event even at the expense of other clubs’ activities.

78 Ladies, 130 Amateurs (main event for handicap 9 and under), 110 Amateurs for subsidiary event and 78 Professionals across Africa and beyond will compete in their respective Opens.

The tournament’s ceremonial tee-off was done on Wednesday by sponsor representatives, organizers and some of the UGU and UGC members. The official practice round for the Ladies Open was also done on Wednesday.
Tournament Director John Katto says that it’s almost a miracle to play this year’s event because of Covid-19 that was a huge blow for sports world wide.

“We are delighted that we are finally holding the event. The course is in good condition despite inclement weather because it has been designed to withstand such conditions,” Katto said at the ceremonial tee-off.

Uganda Golf Union President Moses Matsiko and his female counterpart Evah O. Magala re echoed the need to follow SOPs to curb a possible spread of the pandemic.

Spectators will be allowed to follow proceedings live on course but will be guided by “Covid-19 martials” to avoid breaking social distancing and other related rules.

The tournament sponsors are; Tusker Malt Lager (main sponsor), Next Media, Master Power, Pinnacle Security, Pepsi, Stanbic Bank Uganda and Case Medicare (who will handle any COVID-19 issues and other health related matters).

2019 Uganda Open Winners:

Ladies: Martha Babirye (Uganda)

Amateurs: Daniel Nduva (Kenya)

Pros: Muthiya Madalitso (Zambia)
