In a solemn announcement, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has postponed all rugby matches initially scheduled for February 15, 2025, following the untimely passing of Kampani Eagles RFC player Ronnie Kayondo. The player tragically passed away on February 8, 2025, after undergoing surgery for injuries sustained during a rugby match.
In a statement released by the Hon. Secretary, Peter Odong, the Union expressed its profound shock and dismay over the incident. It was emphasized that the decision to reschedule the games was made in consultation with club leadership and key stakeholders to provide the rugby fraternity time to grieve and pay tribute to the departed athlete.
The postponed matches, covering the Nile Special Rugby Premiership, Reserve Premierships, Women’s Premiership, and the Regional Championship, will now take place on February 22, 2025.
Odong further extended heartfelt gratitude to the rugby community for their unwavering support, teamwork, and the solidarity displayed during this difficult time. He acknowledged the efforts of the medical teams and the condolences shared by individuals across the nation.
“We wish all those who traveled far and wide for Ronnie Kayondo’s send-off journey mercies. We will continue to celebrate his life in all our different activities across the country,” the statement concluded.
