Uganda Rugby has named men’s and women’s development squads to compete at the 2026 Burundi Regional 7s in Bujumbura, reinforcing the union’s commitment to developing emerging talent and expanding the national team pipeline.
The tournament, scheduled for July 4, 2026, will see Uganda’s men’s Under-23 side and a women’s development team face regional opponents from Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. Both teams will depart for Bujumbura on Thursday, July 2.
The men’s squad will be led by coach Isaac Massanganzira, while the women’s team will be under the guidance of Edmond Quaresma.
Uganda Rugby Chief Technical Officer Ramsey Olinga described the regional tournament as a key component of the union’s long-term player development strategy.
“This Regional Tournament is essential for our development. We want to see which players are next in line for both men and women to build a strong pipeline of athletes for the future,” Olinga said.
Uganda Rugby Age Grade Rugby Director Dorothy Nekesa said the tournament would provide an opportunity to evaluate players and further strengthen both national programmes.
“This event is an opportunity to continue building depth in the men and women’s programme, test tactical approaches, and identify players who can move into higher levels of national representation,” she said.
