Unbeaten runs on the line as Tayebwa, Kazibwe face-off in National Tennis Championship
Frank Tayebwa and Trevor Kazibwe are set for an epic clash in matchday five of the 2023 Uganda National Tennis Championship (UNTC) scheduled for this Sunday, 23rd April at Kampala Club. This is the most sought after match this weekend and the fans are most definitely going to witness good and entertaining tennis.
After four outings, Tayebwa and Kazibwe are the only unbeaten players in the Men’s Group A of the championship (with 12 points) and both players are now faced with the possibility of losing their first game of the regular season.
Tayebwa, who is the men’s title holder seemingly has an upper hand having lost just 9 games and winning 48. He hasn’t lost a set so far and all those that have faced him have returned home empty handed.
Kazibwe on the other hand has come of age and he is in good shape and has potential of upsetting anyone in the championship.
Unlike Tayebwa who has condemned his rivals to large-margin losses and claimed victories within a short stint, Kazibwe has played more games, winning 52 and losing 24 of those. He has however lost just one set when he recoverd from the lose of the opening set to win his match against Marvin Kiriwo during the third outing of the campaign.
However, throughout the championship, there are many must-watch matches scheduled as it is a pivotal day for most players in the championship as many will have to fight to stay in contention for the title and prized trip to France
At the bottom of men’s tables, Bob Matsiko, Said Mawa, Kato Said Musa and Hafiz Abdallah have an opportunity to finally register a win, something that eluded them in their last four matches.
In the women’s division, title holder Winnie Birungi who has won her previous three matches with straight sets will seek to maintain her perfect run when she comes up against Alison Comfort.
Birungi lost to Alison recently at the launch of the UNTC ‘23 season which was her first domestic loss in years. Matchday 5 presents her with the perfect opportunity for revenge as she once again takes on Alison in a highly anticipated clash.
Following their mixed fortunes this season, the mid table clashes, pitting Joel Mwisuke against Marvin Kiriwo and Arnold Jurua against Edward Birungi, present these seasoned competitors with a huge opportunity to realign their credentials.
Qualifying for the quarterfinals may be a tall order for them at this point, but Paul Ssekandi and Francis Agonzebwa could use their day 5 clash to reignite their hopes of making the quarters.
With these and the other promising clashes, the action on day 5 of the UNTC is going to be explosive. Starting at 12:00pm at the Kampala Club and dubbed “the Ladder-Special,” day 5 is going to be a celebration of tennis where the social tennis players of the Ladder Community, in and around Kampala, will be appreciated for their role in keeping tennis alive and exciting over the years.
The general public is also invited to severe this great tennis action and join in the celebration. In addition to the entertaining tennis action on the courts, a sumptuous BBQ will be one of the highlights of the day.
The Uganda National Tennis Championship ‘23 is organised by Tena Tennis Academy Uganda in partnership with the Association Familiae de Turckheim (AFT) in France and the Uganda Tennis Association.
